"Prize of Rome" 1939 - Oil on canvas - 115 x 146 cm
Born on August 12th, 1911 in Paris, Alice Richter points out very early, towards the age of 15 years, for her gifts in drawing and painting. At the age of 18, she enters the famous "Ecole des Beaux-Arts de Paris" in André Devambez's studio.
Prize-winner of numerous compete during her programme to the Fine art School (Prize Jauvin d'Attainville, Prize Fortin d'Ivry, Competition Roux, Competition of the trunk, Competition of painted sketch, Alice Richter obtained two "Prizes of Rome" : in 1933 and in 1939 !
The jury of that period jibbing crowning a woman, needed twelve ballots to finally
award, in one vote near, the Fist Prize to her competitor, who was a man.
At the same time, during her last year, she became Drawing teacher and obtained
at once a post to the secondary school of Bourges.
The same year, she married the painter Antoine Martinez, her workmate in the Fine art School of Paris.
